Engineering Play: Redefining Game Design at Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL)

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia — Rickman Roedavan, lecturer at Telkom University and Head of Metalabs (Multimedia Engineering Technology Research Laboratory), delivered a guest lecture on Game Design at Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) as part of an ongoing international academic collaboration.

The session focused on foundational and advanced principles of game design, exploring how narrative structure, mechanics, player engagement, and system dynamics interact to create meaningful digital experiences. Students were introduced to structured design frameworks that bridge creativity and engineering within the game development process.

Designing Games with Purpose

During the lecture, Rickman emphasized that effective game design goes beyond visual aesthetics and programming. A well-designed game requires a strong conceptual foundation, including clear player goals, balanced mechanics, motivational systems, and immersive storytelling elements.

Drawing from his experience as the author of the best-selling Unity Tutorial Game Engine series, he shared practical insights into how design thinking can be implemented using Unity-based development workflows. The discussion also highlighted the importance of rapid prototyping, iterative design, and user-centered development in modern game production.

Academic Collaboration in Digital Innovation

The lecture represents the strengthening partnership between Telkom University and UniKL in the fields of interactive multimedia and game technology. Through cross-border academic exchange, both institutions aim to cultivate globally competitive graduates equipped with both technical competence and creative vision.

The event concluded with an interactive discussion session where students explored future trends in immersive technology, metaverse integration, and game-based learning innovation — reinforcing the role of game design as a multidisciplinary field that combines art, technology, and educational impact.
